new rage: free music...nine in nails gives you their latest

say what you will about where nine inch nails has gone musically over the years, i for one could live without much of their output since the downward spiral but at least trent has his head in the right spot. granted giving your new record away is the rage these days like radiohead did with inrainbows...nine inch nails take the idea where it should be...and that is by giving you multiple high quality formats to choose from and give you no option to contribute a single dollar whereas radiohead gave you an option to donate an amount of your choice (i gave $2.00 out of sheer guilt as i felt the concept was pretty awesome) and then gave you the album at a bit rate of 160. nine inch nails offer their newest in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. your link will include all options - all free. all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.
you go trent !

update: got the record via email and it isn't very good... trent reznor lost his musical edge a long time ago in my opinion, however he still fights the good fight... even if he did steal a pigface song... thanks for the free tunes trent!
a side note: the cover got me excited that this would be the right turn musically i was hoping nin would take... oh well !
anyways... here is nin playing the stolen song when nin was truly great!

United Visual Artists : Yan Shu Commission

UVA was commissioned to create an instillation in a new terminal at london's heathrow airport. The commission is designed to bring attention to china design now.

The idea of the instillation is to promote the sharing of experiences in different cultures.
Browse the UVA site for on this, some cool videos and slide show photos of the instillation as well as a lot of other work they have done. Just about all of it is amazing. Here is some of the work they did in 2004 for Massive Attack.

i approve this ad...the happiness factory

I do not approve this on the basis of how they are making working in a factory look fun, although that is a tough thing to do and they seemed to have accomplished that. I approve this based on the quality of the work and how tight the concept is. You can see the continuity through out the entire work and it really is a flawless site.

AKQA in new york and coca-cola have an interesting take on employee morale. They created the happiness factory which is in essence a micro-site to change perception of what it means to be an employee for coca-cola. They launched this on a global scale in 40 languages.

The idea was to have employees and potential employees interact with the company and give the impression of a fun and hilarious atmosphere at the coca-cola factory.

the site starts with an animated movie that would make pixar proud.

it then leads you to the site where you can pick various characters who act as employees, you punch them in and they go to work which turns out to be interactive video games that you play. Again the graphics are top notch.

sceam bloody water

think geek is selling these led lights that light up your water to let you know if the water is hot or cold. it doesn't change the color of the water just illuminates it. i imagine letting your girlfriend discover the "bloody water" in the middle of the night for the first time would be good times!

get out and play.......does stop motion ever get old?

Nokia has put together an awesome site to promote a new video game feature NGage via a website called get out and play. While the site loads you play an analog looking version of the classic game breakout or arkanoid.
It then leads to an amazing stop motion video that pays homage to the classic nokia game snake and features a cardboard robot villain as well as a really awesome couple of frames dedicated to people running into a wall.

The most innovative part of the site is the interactive video game which is basically a modern version of breakout or arkanoid but instead of dots, lines and a ball you get to control a "human bar" and knock a human into a wall of humans via stop motion animation. It's not the most high tech game ever by any means but it's a cool concept. NOTE... the game happens halfway through the entire video where 1,000 people make the worlds longest snake using stop motion. Pretty awesome.

the future you've been waiting for that you still can't live in.

with main stream auto design being as stale as it is, it's about time these objects finally come to life. most of us grew up being clobbered over the head with images of what the future will look like. thanks to places like MIT and people like renowned architect Frank O. Gehry, car's like this are being designed.
i was led to this car while browsing the smart cities site where they have posted the bit car. this is stackable electric car which will be placed near train and bus stops and places of high pedestrian traffic and you rent the car like a luggage cart at the airport. The best part is that the car re-charges once it is returned to a station. take that zip car
this led me to looking at other concept cars etc... with so much media attention to going green, it's nice to see design and earth preservation merging into interesting new products. now if they would only make and mass produce these things already...
here is a link to a cool pdf presentation of some of the concept cars and some running prototypes.
here are some more pics of other amazing cars. more details can be see at the ARCHiNODE STUDIO

blogger play

a cool new toy offered up by google via their blogger site. it's called blogger play and it pulls images from blogger sites (like this one) and lets you view some random images. what's cool though is that you can click on any image and it takes you to the blog the image is from. who know's what you will find.

the idea of image driven curiosity is pretty awesome.

a similar idea is done on a really amazing website called we feel fine where they explore human emotions in six movements: madness, murmurs, montage, mobs, metrics and mounds. The site pulls sample sentences from various blogs all over the world. And also allows you get to the blog the quote originated from. Not to mention the interface is really awesome as well. Check it.

Dear APPLE, take THAT...Sincerely, Dell

Dell is about to launch an "eco-friendly" computer... you have a plant a tree in your living room and they send a tech-guy out to gut the planted tree and install a screen, a motherboard and some usb slots.... ok I kid, but this is kinda cool. I snagged the pictures off earth2tech

Dell claims the computer is 81 % smaller than a standard desktop, uses 70 percent less power and is filled with recycled materials like old bottles, milk jugs and detergent cases. (and you thought all that crap would only make shitty hard tissue and those nice little sleeves that coffee shops give you so as to not burn your hand)

The computer is supposed to drop later this year and run between $500 and $700.

MY SUGGESTION... add a projector that allows the image to shine on the wall or a monitor sized screen and eliminate the monitor altogether.
